Scissor lifts came into existing in the early seventies. Since then, the basic underlying design has remained constant, although more advanced material is now being used. Scissor lifts became popular with retail establishments which found its highly portable and compact structure especially appealing, as the entire contraption can snugly fit into the corner of the workspace.
The scissor lift has linked folding supports underneath the platform, arranged in a scissor-like fashion. When unfolded, the supports extend upward, thus raising the platform in the air. When fully extended, the platform can extend to a height of anywhere between 21 and 62 feet above the ground, depending on the model being used. The scissor lift is powered by either a hydraulic mechanism or an electric motor. The design of the lift prevents it from moving at constant speed. The higher the platform, the slower is the speed of the lift.
